Albright Knox Art Museum - Buffalo, NY

Date: Friday, October 10, 2008

Tour Escorts: Luke & Greta Colavito

Deadline: Thursday, September 4, 2008 by 3PM

Our one-day trip to Buffalo will be on Friday, October 10, 2008.  Our first stop will be the Albright Knox Art Gallery, a museum with a world-wide reputation as an outstanding center of modern art.  In addition, the museum’s permanent collection includes impressionism, post-impressionism, cubism, surrealism, constructivism, and other trends as documented by works of Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Derain, Miro, Mondrian, and others.  Free audio tours will be available.  The original museum was completed in 1905 with a generous gift from Buffalo philanthropist John J. Albright.  In the 1960s the Gallery was significantly enhanced with the addition of a new wing, made possible with a major donation from Seymour H. Knox, Jr.

In the afternoon we’ll be touring Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin D. Martin House complex, recently restored to its original plan of 1907.  It is a one-of-a-kind integrated compound, consisting of the 10,000 square-foot main house, a smaller yet equally stunning Barton House constructed for Martin’s sister and her husband, a carriage house, a gardener’s cottage, and a spectacular glass-roofed conservatory linked to the main house by a 100-foot long pergola.  It can be argued that the complex is the most important house designed during the first half of Wright’s career, matched only by Falling Water over 30 years later.
