Shakespeare on Film: The Power of Plays (8 sessions January)

January 25, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, repeating until March 1, 2023

$10.00 – $40.00

Over eight weeks, we will view eight modern feature-length films of plays: seven by Shakespeare that explore the never-ending quest for kingly power; and one written by Ben Elton that pays homage to Shakespeare’s last years. Modern filmmaking techniques with skilled actors and inspired direction enhance audience enjoyment and remove the scholarly heaviness that too often intimidates rather than entertains. The instructor will present written introductions to each film. Familiarity with the texts or plots is not required. All films will be subtitled for added clarity and enjoyment. Optional discussion can follow when time permits. Each screening will include a ten-minute intermission to stretch legs, etc. (Oh, there will be no tests or quizzes!)

Preston Wilson: Preston taught English at Auburn High School for 39 years during which time he honed his skills as a presenter of Shakespeare to often initially doubtful teenagers using professionally performed films and scripts. He presented a similar course on a different set of Shakespeare’ s plays on film to Lifelong attendees last spring and received great satisfaction in seeing the class appreciate Shakespeare on a wholly new and exciting level. He is a former Peace Corps volunteer (Ecuador), a happy gardener, and even happier grandfather.
